Meeting #6 with FINstitute Exec and Dr. Andrew Chin

Intro to the FINstitute and opening talk on fish traps by Dr. Andrew Chin

Aliah & Luca

We got to hear from my president and vice president about what the FINstitue is and why it was founded. We also got to introduce the entire executive board to the club as well as announced some pretty cool upcoming field trips and hands-on learning opportunities that we have organized!

We were so happy to see so many new and familiar faces at our first meeting of the semester and can't wait to keep this momentum going

HUGE thank you to Dr. Chin for a thought-provoking opening talk about the potential for fish traps to replace gill nets.

Some highlights from the talks included:

  • Learning about the history of fish traps here in Australia by indigenous cultures

  • Thinking critically about the newly imposed gill net bans in Queensland and understanding that although this is a massive conservation win for classically bycaught species, this victory may mean an export of our environmental footprint to neighboring countries

  • Getting to see a video of a fish trap being deployed, coupled with the incredibly selective nature of the technique
