Meeting #20 Zebra shark reproduction & Shark handling workshop
Today we hosted an insightful meeting where we heard from Dr Kady Lyons from the Georgia Aquarium and Dr Nico Lubitz. For this workshop, we were able to watch a live demostration of a frozen hammerhead shark provided by the Queensland shark control program.
Some highlights from Dr. Kady Lyon’s talk included:
How ultrasounds identify fertile eggs 30 days earlier than the typical candling method
The use of ultrasonography to significantly improve visualisation of developmental features
Early identification of embryo abnormalities during incubation
If you missed her talk, you can watch the recorded version here.
Some highlights from the shark handling workshop:
Learning how sharks are tagged and tracked by his team for a variety of research purposes
In-depth demonstrations of safe shark handling methods post-capture with a real hammerhead shark
