Meeting #25 Social Sciences & Alternative Livelihoods in Indonesia.

Thank you again to all of you who attended our meeting. We hope you had as much fun learning about social sciences and alternative livelihoods in Indonesian shark fisheries as we did!

Thank you to Dr. Hollie Booth for sharing her research looking into the fairness of conservation initiatives in Indonesian shark fisheries and the lessons learned in changing human behaviours.

Some highlights from Hollie’s talk included:

  • Learning from Hollie about the trade-offs associated with conservation, between the goal of preserving intrinsic and tourism values and supporting the livelihoods of coastal communities.

  • Getting a look into the dynamics of positive and negative incentives for fishers from a case study in Aceh Jaya / West Aceh ISRA, Indonesia on wedge fish and hammerhead shark fisheries.

Hollie and her team are developing a community-based shark conservation program for early career researchers and conservation professionals and would like feedback on this potential idea HERE!

Thank you as well to Kathy Xu, founder of The Dorsal Effect, for sharing her journey into shark conservation and the new experiences that have shaped how she approaches supporting alternative livelihoods in Indonesian shark fisheries.

Some highlights from Kathy’s talk included:

  • The approaches made by Kathy in Lombok fishing markets to gather a deeper understanding of the layers involved in shark fisheries.

  • Hearing about the work with school programs that The Dorsal Effect is involved in, particularly speaking with fishermen and visiting fishing ports to collect catch data.
