International Sawfish Day

WHEN: Thursday, Oct 17th, 3-6 pm

WHERE: Outside Education Central, James Cook University Townsville

Join us in celebrating International Sawfish Day!

We will appreciate this special (but highly threatened) family of rays with games, PRIZES and other fun activities, everything sawfish themed of course.

This event will be open to all JCU students, staff and the public as well! Our aim with this event is to have market-style stalls and interactive games to increase the appreciation and awareness of these species. Currently, 3 out of 5 of the sawfish species are listed on the IUCN Red List as Critically Endangered, while the remaining two are listed as Endangered. This is for a variety of reasons: hunting, entanglement in fishing nets and habitat loss.

These unique and interesting creatures do not have nearly as much appreciation and awareness as they deserve, and that is what this event is all about. So we welcome you to join us and look forward to seeing you there!

  • $100 Adrenalin Snorkel & Dive Voucher

In northern Australia, the Anindilyakwa natives believe that ancient supernatural beings in the form of sawfishes used their sharp toothed rostra to carve out rivers and gave lands to the people.
