Meeting #17 Club intro & Project Hiu Experience

HUGE thank you to Rifqi Mantari for sharing his experiences interning at Project Hiu, which provides alternative sources of income to shark fishermen in the world’s largest shark fishing nation, Indonesia.

Some highlights from his talk included:

  • How Project Hiu was founded by Australian film maker, Madison Stewart, with the help of local fisherman, Odie

  • Getting an inside look at the shark fishing industry in Indonesia and the role Project Hiu has played in reducing the sharks caught by this community

  • The humanitarian work done with the local community (including providing clean water and toilets at school) and frontier research tagging tiger sharks in the Lombok region

  • Hearing Rifqi’s personal experience of working in shark conservation and its shocking moments
